About school of physics
Department of Physics was originally started in 1976 as a unit of Autonomous Post Graduate Centre of the University of Madras at Tiruchirappalli. Later on, it became the Department of Physics of Bharathidasan University, in 1982. Since its inception, the Department has shown very good interest in Research and soon attained a very high reputation and recognition at both National and at International level. This was achieved by way of training young Post-Graduate students towards research in frontier topics.
The Center for Non-linear Dynamics was created in the Department of Physics during 1991 as a recognition of Bhatnagar award given to Dr. M. Lakshmanan. Two more Centers namely Centre for High Pressure Research and Centre for Nano-Science and Nanotechnology were started in 2010. Later in the year 1993 – 1994, a two year M.Sc. Physics Course was started by the University. M.Sc. Medical Physics (Two year) and M.Sc. Physics (Five year integrated) programmes were started in the academic year 2006 –2007. M. Phil. course was re-introduced during the academic year 2009 – 10.
